Sir Dandy’s Color Trap

Friday, 19 October 2012

What happens if the innocent Little Red Riding Hood we once knew turned out to be more powerful than the wolf? Would the wolf carry around her bags and luggage? Would he do the house chores and sing her love songs while she sat around and read the newspapers? Well, maybe you don’t care.. and I never thought about it either, but Sir Dandy does. In his solo exhibition at Dia.lo.gue Artspace, Kemang, Jakarta entitled “Color of The Trap”, Sir Dandy, with the help of Sundea as the writer, reconstructed the classic children story of Little Red Riding Hood.

A series of typical-Sir Dandy style of paintings illustrate how things would go round when a victim takes over the control of the bad guy, and worse, gets him to do what she wants, humiliates him by making him her maid. The bitterness of the tale that once told by Charles Perrault, is transformed into a more playful, casual, and even sensual ambience, showing an interesting relationship between Riding Hood and The Wolf. Maybe they had fallen in love with each other, maybe somehow after what everything had gone by, they couldn’t live without one another, and thus, who actually got trapped in whose trap? All these fragments are well represented by Sir Dandy in this exhibition, particularly with some interesting diorama of the scenes and setting of the story.

The exhibition was opened by a familiar curator in the Indonesian art scene, Asmudjo J. Irianto, with a brief statement of appreciation for all the displayed artworks. The ceremony was soon followed by a performance from Sir Dandy himself, singing one of his songs “Sikat, Jhon!” accompanied by The Mission: Possible, a duo ensemble consists by a Hammond organ and drums who later performed a number of standard jazz repertoires. The celebration was then wrapped up by DJ dxxxt to call it a day.

Cool night breeze, nice familiar faces in the backyard, yummy ice cream and cupcakes, eye-soothing paintings, and delicious music, just enough entertainment to celebrate something we just discovered through Sir Dandy’s artwork: that as a matter of fact, the Little Red Riding Hood is having fun with The Wolf.
